INSTAGRAM: ARE WE FRIENDLY OR WE ARE ENVY?

The whole issue of how the social media affects us was brought up by my Social Sciences teacher a couple of days ago. She slightly mentioned that our generation tends to be more jealous and envy both of acquitances and strangers.

Particularly the perfect pictures of perfect people in perfect places provoke negative feelings and challenge our self-esteem. I couldn't get her speech out of my head to the point that I trolled my friends with questions (guess how happy they were with me interrupting their lunch).

Frankly, once in a while I feel crushed. Especially after looking at  someone's picture relaxing in sunny Abu Dhabi while I'm freezing my ass in -20C Moscow. But this usually doesn't take more than 2 minutes.

See, I was obsessed with the topic because not only I relate to it in some way but just 2 weeks ago I was reading an article on nytimes.com, which stated the opposite: the Internet became friendlier. Well, in some aspects it really did, in some it didn't.

But let's get back to the friends-trolling part. Most of them assured me that those square-perfect shot worked more like an inspiration and motivation rather than I-feel-like-shit prescription. What can I say? My friends passed the jealousy test and they are ready to drive Instagram. But do you hide anything behind that like button?
